However, he pointed out that they would have to increase the number of nursing graduates from WIT to replace those retiring from the profession in the South East and to allow region’s health services to expand to the level required.At the moment there are 450 under-graduates studying for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at WIT’s new Nursing Education Building, which opened last autumn.
The degree is run in three nursing disciplines: general nursing, psychiatric nursing and intellectual disability nursing.
Joan Phelan, Director of the HSE’s Nursing & Midwifery Planning and Development Unit, said the HSE had a problem several years ago in attracting people to the profession but the number of students applying to study nursing had increased over the past year or two.
