The Federal Aviation Administration issued an order this week extending for a third time limits on peak-hour scheduling at one of the world's busiest airports through the last weekend in October.Congestion at O'Hare, a hub for the biggest airlines and a major connecting point for domestic and international flights, can ripple through the U.S.
air space system and delay flights several hundred miles away.
"The FAA is taking this action to ensure that congestion and delay at O'Hare remain at manageable levels through the upcoming summer scheduling season while the agency finalizes a more detailed rule," FAA officials said in a regulatory filing.
Its original order was imposed in August 2004, after the airlines agreed to reduce flight schedules during the busiest periods of the day.
The latest extension expires on Saturday.
